Controlling blood sugar levels

Researchers from the US Army Natick Soldier Research Center, in Massachusetts, USA, have looked at the role extracts from cocoa, grapes, cranberries and pomegranates might have in controlling blood sugar levels.
The researchers focussed on tannin compounds from these plants and found that these were able to controlling blood sugar by inhibiting the binding abilities of the digestive enzymes alpha-amylase and glucoamylase.
All four foods were able to inhibit the activity of glucoamylase to varying degrees - but only cranberry extracts – followed closely by pomegranate – were effective in inhibiting alpha-amylase activity.
